PUNE: The eighth-seeded Anastasiya Vasylyeva of Ukraine edged out Sanaa Bhambri 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 in the pre-quarterfinals of the NECC $50,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the Deccan Gymkhana here on Wednesday.

Qualifier Sheethal Goutham also went down fighting in three sets to Chen Astrogo of Israel. Former champion Nirupama Sanjeev found the top-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand too hot to handle and Poojashree Venkatesh managed to eke out a solitary game against the third-seeded Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia.
Sanaa in partnership with Rushmi Chakravarthi kept the Indian hopes alive in doubles, by making the semifinals.
