East Bengal, Salgaocar to lock horns in Federation Cup fina
33rd AIFF FEDERATION CUP - 2011:Final
East Bengal will be looking for their eighth Federation Cup football title when they take on I—league champions Salgaocar in their third consecutive final at the Salt Lake Stadium here Thursday.
For East Bengal, it will be a chance to win a hat—trick of titles, while Salgaocar will be hoping for a repeat of the 1997 final when they defeated the red and gold brigade 2—1 for their third title.
Salgaocar have made their first final in 14 years, and they are also aware of the fact that last season’s I—League runners—up East Bengal are eager for revenge in front of their home crowd.
It will be test of character for Karim Bencherifa’s boys, and players like Karanjit Singh, Luciano Sobrosa, Ryuji Sueoka, Rocus Lamare and Edeh Chidi will have to step up.
With a solid defence, Salgaocar are yet to concede a goal, which makes them a more potent force to reckon, and strong contenders for the title triumph.
For East Bengal, it has been tough ride to the final. They had to beat Dempo 1—0 in their final group match to progress from the group of death into last four. Then, in the semifinal, they had to come from behind to win 2—1 against Prayag United, who were reduced to nine men with the score tied 1—1 in the second half.
East Bengal have injury worries as key playmaker Mehtab Hussain and defender Raju Gaikwad have still not recovered from their injuries. But charismatic striker Robin Singh will be available after serving a suspension.
