Anand to inaugurate World Jr Chess Championships

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu State Chess Association under the aegis of the AICF will organise the SDAT–Ramco 50th World Junior and 29th Junior Girls Chess Championships at Hotel Vijay Park from August 1 to 15 here. Players from 49 countries are participating in the event. In the Open category, 127 players will be seen in action. In the girls category, 69 entries have been received so far. The championship will consist of 13 rounds.
World champion Viswanathan Anand will inaugurate the tournament on August 1.“Several GMs, WGMs will participate in the event making the tournament a competitive one. Maxim Matlakov of Russia, who has a rating of 2632 is the top seed. The top Indian players are GMs B Adhiban and SP Sethuraman, who are former U-16 world champions,” said FIDE vice-president DV Sundar.WGM Nazi Palkidze of Georgia is the one to beat in the women’s event. Padmini Rout is the top ranked Indian player among women.
