NEW DELHI: Indian challenge in the World Cup chess championship was precariously close to an early end after Sandipan Chanda, K. Sasikiran and Surya Shekhar Ganguly lost the first game of the second round at Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, on Tuesday.
Chanda lost to Russia’s Dmitry Jankovic in 42 moves, Sasikiran surrendered to Frenchman Etienne Bacrot in 57 moves and Ganguly gave up in 87 moves against Chinas Wang Hao. The Indians face a must-win situation on Wednesday to stay alive in the knockout competition.
The day also provided a spate of surprises with Tomi Nyback (Finland) beating Peter Svidler (Russia), Alexander Morozevich (Russia) losing to Victor Laznicka (Czech Republic), Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine) resigning against young Filipino So Wesley and Konstantin Sakaev (Russia) defeating Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan),
