KOLKATA: Deepika Kumari of India won the individual gold medal in the cadet recurve women section at the 11th Youth World archery championship in Ogden (Utah), United States, on Sunday.
This is the second time India is winning a world title in archery. Palton Hansda became the first Indian to be the World champion at Merida (Mexico) in 2006 by winning the junior compound individual gold medal in the ninth edition of the World championship.
Sanjay Boro annexed the bronze medal in the cadet recurve men’s individual section to ensure India a total of one gold and two bronze medals in this edition.
This placed India at the fifth position in the final medals tally.
Deepika, a trainee at the Jamshedpur-based Tata Archery Academy, is the current senior National and sub-junior National champion.
Consistent
The fourth-seeded Indian was consistent throughout the championship. She had scores of 115 and 112 in the quarterfinals and the semifinals before sealing the historic victory by beating her tenth-ranked Russian opponent, Sayana Tsyrempilova, 115-109, in the final.
Deepika was in roaring form in the final taking 29 points off the first three arrows. The second end of three also earned her 29.
In the third she shot two 9s and a 10 for 28 points but by then she had taken a six-point lead (86-80) going into the last end of three arrows.
A 9, 10,10 by the Indian ensured the great finish.
Boro delights
Boro, a boy from Assam and a product of Sports Authority of India, justified his seventh seeding by beating 29th ranked Antonio Hector Smith of Mexico 110-105.
India had won two silver medals in 2008 at Kundu-Antalya (Turkey).
However, the best haul so far had come in 2006 when India won a gold and three silver medals at Merida (Mexico).
