WARANGAL: Nikhil Neethin and K. Subhashini looked unlikely winners, let alone new record-holders. Built more like sprinters — minus the flab and weight common to throwers, the duo erased the boys’ and girls’ under-14 years shot put marks respectively in the Dr. Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy memorial junior National athletics championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday.

Neethin heaved the sphere to 13.41 metres, nearly a metre more than meet and national record-holder S. Lakshmana Moorthy, who had touched 12.48m.
Son of former State champion P.K. Neethin, Nikhil revealed he had trained with a 5.5 kg orb and found the 4.5 kg ball a lot lighter. He was, however, not happy with this display, hoping to touch his personal best of 14.20m at the Amritsar School Games Nationals from November 23.

Coached by Rajesh Kumar, Neethin acknowledged the support of Kalladi Higher Secondary School’s K.C.K. Syehtaly, who’d left no stone unturned to ensure the wiry teenager could give his best.
Subhashini of St. Joseph’s Sports Academy, Coimbatore, employed the O’Brien Glide to good effect, surpassing Keralite Athira M. Dharan’s 9.17m by a full metre. Coached by Nanda Kumar, she’s a ninth standard student of Sri Sowdeshwari Vidyalaya High School.
With even speed and stride, Kerala’s M.D. Thara overtook a straggler twice in the under-16 girls’ 3000m. At the tape, she was ahead of her nearest rival by more than half a minute and 100 metres.
