DHARWAD: As many as 11 new records were created in the 12th inter-collegiate athletic meet of the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) which concluded at the SDM College of Engineering and Technology in Dharwad on Saturday.
Although the meet was formally inaugurated on Wednesday, because of rain no events were held on the inaugural day. On Thursday, Taranath Shetty of Sahyadri Institute of Technology, Mangalore set the trend by registering a new meet record in the men’s high jump by clearing the bar at 1.82 metres.
A new meet record was set in the women’s high jump also. Kavya Muttanna of Dr Ambedkar Institute of Technology (Bangalore) improved her previous record (1.65m) to clear the bar set at 1.71m.
In the women’s discus throw, Sneha M. of Canara Engineering College (Bantwal) improved her earlier record (30.09m) with a throw of 31.09m.
On Friday, Rakesh Shetty of Sir M. Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology (Bangalore) set a record in the men’s pole vault clearing 3m. The silver and bronze medallists in the event Mohammad Farhan Sheikh of MVJCE (Bangalore) and Rakesh Shetty of VCET (Dakshin Kannada) also broke the previous record of 2.80m.
Ashton W. Cowlho of SIT (Dakshin Kannada) created a new record in the men’s discus throw with a throw of 36.61m, while Mohamma Ali of Anjuman Engineering College (Uttar Kannada) bagged the gold medal in the men’s hammer throw with a record throw of 33.37m.
In women’s 4x100 relay, Gogte Institute of Technology (Belgaum) set new record by completing the run in 4:50.07s. M.K. Kumar of NMAM (Dakshin Kannada) completed the men’s 400m run in a record timing of 52.31s.
On the final day of the event on Saturday Kavya Muttana of Dr Ambedkar Institute of Technology (Bangalore) registered her second record in the meet by jumping a distance of 10.99m in the women’s triple jump. Ajit of SJCE (Mysore) set a record in the men’s decathlon securing 4,131 points.
In the last event of the meet, MSRIT set a record in the women’s 4x100m relay at 57.90s. MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology (Bangalore) won the overall championship in the event. Kavya Muttanna and G. Manjuanth were adjudged as best athletes.
