Asian Games champion Preeja Sreedharan set a meet record en route to the women’s 10,000M gold on the opening day of the 76th All India Railway athletics championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday

Southern Railways’ Preeja timed 34:00.28, erasing her own mark of 34:19.6 set two years back.

Soji Matthew (Western) grabbed the corresponding men’s crown in a time of 30:08.99.
Another Asian Games champion, Joseph Abraham, won the 400M hurdles comfortably, timing 51.67 seconds.

Western Railways’ B G Nagaraj and South Central’s Sathi Geetha emerged champions in the 100M races. Nagaraj clocked 10.78 seconds for the men’s title while Geetha stopped the clock at 12.03 seconds for the women’s crown.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist MA Prajusha, representing South West, proved her prowess with a 12.64 metre jump to clinch the triple jump crown in the women’s category.  Reshmi Bose (Southern) and Niksy Joseph (Central) grabbed the second and third places with jumps of 12.02 and 11.94 metres respectively.

Poonia sets new mark in discus

Vikas Poonia and Gurmeet Singh rewrote meet marks on the second day of the 76th All India Railway athletics championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.

North Central’s Vikas achieved a distance of 55.34 metres in discus throw for the gold, erasing Shakti Singh’s 14-year-old mark of 55.30.

Earlier, Gurmeet Singh of Northern Railway timed one hour 23 minutes 05.84 seconds en route to his 20km walk title. Gurmeet erased the old mark of 1::32:31.41 created by Ashok Patel in 2009. Western’s Soji Mathew had a memorable outing as he completed a grand double. Soji, who won the 10000M gold on Wednesday, clocked 14:35.22 to pocket the 5000M gold.
