Description

Established in 1932 with the prime objective of promoting sports in the residential heart of
Mumbai, The Indian Gymkhana joyously celebrates its Platinum Jubilee in 2007.
Our mission is to nurture and groom talent, provide sports facilities and resources and act
as a catalyst for achieving excellence in sports. Above all, we wish to abide by the Gymkhana’s
motto, Aleam Lude - Play the Game. To this, we re-dedicate ourselves.

Infrastructure
The Indian Gymkhana is a ‘One-source Multi-resources’ Sports Complex,
which offers a wide range of sports facilities to amateurs and sports
professionals, all under one roof.

The two-storey Pavilion building has a 640 sq. mtr. built-up area. On the ground floor, a warm, friendly atmosphere greets the visitor in the Lounge. One can
watch television in an enclosed area, play bridge or carom at the tables or simply relax and unwind. The Gymkhana Office and In-house Restaurant are also on
the ground floor. The first floor has facilities for Indoor Badminton, Table Tennis, Bridge, Carom and Chess.

The Playground is a 12000 sq. mtr. fenced area, with a Jogging Track around the periphery. The Basketball and Tennis courts are floodlit. The ground is also
utilised for Cricket, Football and Volleyball.

The Pavilion and Playground have been leased to the Gymkhana by BMC for 60 years from 1972, with a provision for further extension. The Gymkhana is
affiliated to State and National sports bodies like MSBA (Basketball), BCBA, MCA, MSBA (Badminton), GBDTTA, BFI and MFA.

Our Mission
• To nurture and groom talent
• To provide sports facilities and resources
• To act as a catalyst for achieving excellence in sports
• To provide a stimulating ambience for mind and body
• To foster health and fitness across all age, income and social groups
• To work towards enhancing quality of environment  for a better quality of life
• To abide, above all, by the Gymkhana’s motto, Aleam Lude

Our Social Commitment
The Gymkhana has converted the whole ground into a green belt, by planting 80 trees around the periphery of the compound, thereby reducing dust to a great extent and resulting in a cleaner greener environment. The Gymkhana continues to offer its ground, pavilion and assistance in conducting the Paraplegic Sports
Nationals
held once in two years. The Gymkhana believes that economic constraints should not deter the pursuit of sports. We nurture talent by adopting students from underprivileged backgrounds and make our sports facilities and
coaching schemes available free of cost.

Our Future Plans
• Hire prominent coaches and trainers for imparting top-of-the-line training
• Offer scholarships to deserving students
• Health Club and Gymnasium at the Pavilion
• Billiards Room
• Extensive repairs on the existing Badminton courts
• Vermiculture program in collaboration with BMC.

In Appreciation of a Sporting Monument
- A. K. Iyer

At Matunga stands the Indian Gym
For sportspersons, it is a Holy Hymn
It provides the right deck for her or him
Willing ever to play with a vim

Mind you, risking even monetary losses
Withstood the odds, encouraging the masses
It is open to all sporting boys ’n’ lasses
Unmindful of caste, creed, but all classes

The Gymkhana and Basketball marched hand in hand
Many boys and girls practiced like a musical band
Proved a birthplace for players of class and stand
That bore the Gymkhana’s stamp of quality and brand !

The Tennis and Shuttle courts are the best in the city
A Godly, lovely boon to all in the close vicinity
Good basic coaching gave shape to players so gritty
Now these arenas too are less lively and pretty

For Soccer, a slushy corner proved enough
To blossom players under KP, the ageless tough
For them, the path never a bed of roses but rough
Still, KP’s boys humbled Bagan in Rovers, a champion stuff !!

In the past many made a name
Reaching top in a particular game
The long list is well beyond this rhyme
It’s a pride, some achieved international fame

Should we dwell only on the past glory
Recalling, praising and narrating all old story
Instead of being idle and very sorry
Let’s wake up and act in a hurry

Platinum Jubilee is closely here
RMBT revival, a good start for the year
A milestone for all of us, near and dear
Come let us celebrate and cherish with NO FEAR !

Do not keep away, sit and lament
Waste not let us, any glorious moment
To make it a PLATINUM movement
and fitting tribute to the sporting monument
