7th All India Savio Cup-Don Bosco Basketball Tournament 2012

One of Mumbai's most respected and loved basketball tournaments returns: the 7th edition of the Savio Cup All India Basketball Tournament will be held at the Don Bosco High School in Matunga, Mumbai, from January 8-15, 2012. Once again, some of the best Men's and Women's club teams from around India - plus the now-regular American side 'Shooting For Success' - will take part in the tournament.

Six Men's teams and three Women's teams will take part in the competition, tipped off at 4 PM on Sunday, Jan 8th, with a Men's clash between hosts Maharashtra and the recent winners of the Senior National Basketball Championship, Punjab.

The inauguration ceremony was held at 6 PM on Sunday.

Fr. Bosco D'Mello, the Principal of the Don Bosco School said, "The Savio Cup Basketball tournament for Men and Women is back to enthrall and entertain us in 7th year in succession. It has been growing in reputation and stature year after year and this year in its 7th edition it promises to get even bigger."

The teams participating in the Savio Cup this year are:

Men: Punjab, Indian Railways, Services, Maharashtra, ONGC, Shooting For Success
Women: Southern Railway, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra

Railways were the team to beat last year in both the divisions: the Men's side defeated Shooting For Success in a classic final game, while Southern Railway Women also got their stiffest challenge in the final game against Chhattisgarh.

Shooting For Success, a San Antonio (USA) based basketball club and foundation, will be participating for the fifth consecutive year in the Savio Cup, and they have become one of the favourites of the locals for boasting their athletic lineup of stars. This team will be led once again by their point guard and leader David "DJ" Jones. This year, a new addition to the side will be 6'10" big man Timir Patel, an Indian-origin basketball player from Texas who has played at the highest level of college ball in the US as well as trying his skills in several different countries around the world.

Every year, the Savio Cup also features an exciting slam dunk contest: here is a short video of last year's dunk contest to whet your appetite for the 2012 Savio Cup!

Dear Friends

If you are in touch with the happenings in the world of basketball, you will be aware that the 2011 season of the NBA has come to a standstill. This unfortunately, is not the first time that there has been an impasse between the owners and players. In fact this is the fourth such instance of a lockout. The first was in 1995, which lasted for three months before the 1995–96 season. The second was in 1996, which lasted for a few hours before the 1996–97 season. The third was in 1998–99, which lasted for more than six months and the 1998–99 season had to consequently be shortened. The 2011 lockout began on July 1, 2011 and is currently still on. The main issues dividing the owners and the players are revenue sharing and the structure of the salary cap. During the lockout, teams cannot trade, sign or contact players; and players cannot access NBA team facilities, trainers or staffs. All pre season games and the first six weeks of the 2011–12 season through December 15, 2011, have already been cancelled. Some players have signed contracts to play in other countries, and most have the option to return to the NBA as soon as the lockout ends. The lockout will remain in effect until the National Basketball Players Association and the NBA owners reaches a deal. An unfortunate state of affairs that does not help the owners, the players, the millions of fans, and certainly not the game!

Whether a solution is reached or not, only time will tell. As long as individuals do not take the first steps towards a sensible compromise, no one will gain anything. There will be only losers – of varying degrees! Sydney Harris once said “The three hardest tasks in the world are neither physical feats nor intellectual achievements, but moral acts: to return love for hate, to include the excluded, and to say, "I was wrong".

Fortunately for us, here in Don Bosco – Matunga, our annual dose of high-octane basketball is very much on the cards. The 7th Savio Cup is on schedule and I'm certain all of us; fans, team players, sponsors, and association members are looking forward to another glorious tournament. Over the last seven years the popularity of the tournament has only increased, and along with it, the sport. Basketball is now ranked as the second fastest growing sport in the country, and I'm certain that the efforts made, over the years, by the Savio Club members along with all of us here at Don Bosco High School - Matunga have in some small measure helped in the growth of the game in our beloved country India.

With every good wish

Sincerely,

Fr. JUDE D'MELLO SDB

Dear Friends

The Savio Cup is a time when Basketball is at its peak in the Don Bosco Matunga Community. We've completed six editions of the tournament and now the seventh is on. Each year brings in new excitement.

Last year everyone hoped the American team “Shooting for Success” would win the Cup but it eluded them for the third time. All credit to the Railway players and the coach Ram Kumar who saved the best for the finals. In the women's section Southern Railway once again showed their dominance and beat Chattisgarh in the finals.

What was special about the sixth edition was that a lot of youth were

involved both in organizing the tournament and interacting with each other on social networking sites like facebook and twitter. With statistics being faithfully kept of each of the games and being uploaded daily by Hersh Lapsia and his team, there was interaction and comments from all quarters.

Another noble deed that was done in the sixth edition was to invite and honor people from all categories who have done yeomen service to the game of Basketball and have not been given due recognition.

Really looking forward to the seventh edition of the tournament to

experience the joy and fellowship of meeting players, coaches and friends. Kudos to the team of the Savio Cup for their hard work, commitment and dedication in organizing this tournament year after year. It has surely made an impact on the basketball scene in India.

Description

Don Bosco High School (Matunga)

Don Bosco High School is a Catholic school for boys in Mumbai, India. The school is located in Matunga. It has a subsidiary which was built in 1970 in Borivali.

History

In 1937, the general council of Salesians of Don Bosco approved a plan to buy 60,000 square yards (50,000 m²) land in Matunga from the Bombay Municipal Corporation. The Corporation approved the sale on July 16, 1937. The Don Bosco High School (formerly known as The Catholic Educational Institute) run by them was moved from the rented premises at Tardeo to the new Don Bosco campus at Matunga.

Fr Aurelius Maschio was the man with a vision and the main pillar behind the creation of this epic landmark in the world of education. The land brought from the then Bombay (Mumbai) Municipal Corporation was sheer marshland which was later filled with debris to be able to build the school which started off at a partially completed building on October 31, 1941 and later officially inaugurated on the January 31, 1942. This building still serves as the Main/Secondary section of the school.

The foundation stone of the primary section building was blessed and laid on the feast of Don Bosco January 31, 1950. The building was completed in time for the new school year of June 1951.

Events

Don Bosco High School believes in complete development of a child, which does not restrict itself to academic excellence. It also ensures that sports and co-curricular activities like debates, Singing etc. form an integral part of a students development.

Sports.

The institution excels in almost all forms of sports from basketball, football, volleyball, hockey and cricket. Equipped with world-class facilities like a international styled basketball court, hockey pitch, 3 foot ball pitches and even a roller-skating rink speaks of the institutions dedication towards the development in these areas.

Extra-curricular Activities.

The school organizes and encourages the participation of all its students in the debate, singing, elocution and sports festivals that are organized class-wise, year-on-year.

Annual Events.

The school organizes a Sports Fest every year where every student is expected to participate in one game event and an athletic event to nurture team spirit. This is a two-day long festival and organized by the staff and office-bearers.

The annual 'Care n Share' Christmas Panorama is organized every year with a theme. Themes like Gujarat Earth Quake etc. were taken up and the school contributed by leaps in the re-development of these causes. Just like the name, it motivates the students to reach out to the needy ones and help in any possible way. The Panorama is organized along with a fun-fair where games are organized by the students. Tokens for these games come at a meagre cost and the amount collected is added to the bounty of the cause along with the sponsorships generated by the students.

The Annual Thanksgiving Day is another opportunity for the students to show-case their talents. The school organizes a show every year, most often a Westend-Broadway musical, with stages and cast that can almost be compared to the professionals. The shows are staged over two or three days with the final day being the official Annual Day where deserving students and members of the staff are felicitated. The shows staged in the past are as follows :

1996-1997 : Sam & Sally.

1997-1998 : Vande Mataram (To mark the 50 years of independence).

1998-1999 : Joseph and his amazing (Technicolor) DreamCoat (Westend-Broadway adaptation).

1999-2000 : The Witness (To mark 2000 years of Jesus Christ birth).

2000-2001 : Oliver (Adaptation of Oliver - the Musical).

2008-2009 : Happy Feet (adapted from the movie).

The shows are organised with professional sound, lights and stages sometimes mounting up to 3 floors (Oliver). Most shows have live singing and music while some have live singing with recorded ensemble.
