Description
The fourth edition of the SDAT-RMK Residential School Chennai International Open chess tournament has attracted players from 15 countries including host India.
The main objective of this event is to provide Indian players with an opportunity to make FIDE title norms by playing in home conditions rather than travelling to Europe and spending one lakh, said D.V. Sundar of the Sports Promotion Foundation.
The event will be inaugurated on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, Periamet in Chennai.
Eleven rounds will be held and the event will run until January 12. The first two rounds will be held on January 4.
The field comprises 18 Grandmasters, two Woman Grandmasters, 29 International Masters and three Woman International Masters.
The top three seeds are: Aleksey Aleksandrov of Belarus, Martyn Kravtsiv (Ukr) and Oliver Barbosa (Phi).
There are five untitled high-rated Chinese in the fray and it remains to be seen whether they gain or lose rating or make norms from this Indian event. If they do well, more Chinese would come in the coming years.
The Parsvnath Open at Delhi starts immediately after this event and overseas players have two strikes to make norms with one air ticket to India.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, is situated at the Periyamedu area of Chennai, and also have Jawaharlal Nehru MultiPurpose Indoor Stadium.It has a seating capacity of 7,900 are adjacent to Chennai Central Railway Station and Moore Market Complex and behind the Ribbon Building.
It has a seating capacity of 40,000.
