BANGALORE: As the probe to unearth the realities of the doping scandal that shook Indian athletics begin, questions are now being raised how the offenders had a free run for more than a decade which ensured that malaise became common practice.

Several former coaches confided to TOI that with the spotlight firmly on the tainted athletes and their foreign coach Yuri Ogorodonik, the role and responsibility of the chief coach and camp coordinator who are continuing in their posts for more than a decade has got blurred.

"The chief coach and the camp co-ordinator who is also the warden besides being a coach knew all along what was going on in the camp at the NIS, Patiala. The probe panel should enquire into the duo's role. It appears that while the coordinator continued as a facilitator, the chief coach contributed to the mess by being a mute spectator," a former coach said.

The trainer, who admitted that he never lodged an official complaint with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), said without the active involvement of the camp officials it is difficult for athletes to escape the testing by anti-doping agencies.

"How did it happen so far that whenever the doping control officers visited the camp, the athletes got a wind of it and dodged them. The athletes are asked to go into hiding by those in charge and the DCOs will get a leave letter of the athletes signed by the coaches," he asked.

While the chief coach is in charge of the team from at least from 1995-96, the camp co-coordinator continues in his post from 2002.

Another prominent coach wondered why the role of the two men are not being talked about. "Whenever the athletes do well they come forward to bask in glory but when something goes wrong they vanish. They were there when the Sunita Rani controversy broke and also when several athletes ran away to avoid dope tests in 2006 and they still continue with their jobs," he said.

The coach added that not just the AFI but also the Sports Authority of India (SAI) should take the blame for allowing doping to flourish right under their noses. "It is childish to say that athletes took dope because it was available at the doorstep of Patiala. We are talking about international athletes who are all educated enough to know what is good and bad," he added.
