China will serve as the prime model for the National Institute of Sports Sciences to be set up by the Union Sports Ministry at the Nehru Stadium on November 1.

Announcing the plan that the institute would be first set up as a society before being converted into an Institute of national importance by an Act of Parliament, the Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken, who addressed the media here on Saturday, stated that the project would be drafted under the 12th five-year plan for budgetary allocation.

The project is expected to cost Rs.200 crore and another Rs. 100 crore is scheduled to be spent on various regional centres and linking them up with the national institute.

“I had visited China recently and met the Chinese Sports Minister, Liu Peng, and saw the Chinese Institute of Sports Sciences. We will have linkages and have the same pattern as China,” Maken said.

The hockey institute would be set up at the Dhyanchand National Stadium by the Sports Authority of India with emphasis on research and development, apart from archives for material related to the game.

The establishment of the hockey institute is expected to cost about Rs.20 crore and the minister said that the money would be provided from the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF).

The SAI would also sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for three years, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on October 5, to set up a football hub at the Nehru Stadium. The turf would be developed by the AIFF and it would get to use the facility for 40 days in a year for national and international events.

The SAF football tournament is scheduled to be conducted as part of the deal in December.

The sports minister announced that the ‘come and play' scheme would become operational in all the regional centres of SAI and Special Area Games (SAG) centres shortly.

It was announced that the government would soon establish institutes for cycling, swimming, athletics, football and gymnastics at the various stadia developed for the Commonwealth Games.
