Actor Nana Patekar

Nandakumar Marar
Actor Nana Patekar is gearing himself for a bigger role in taking shooting sport to the masses. He will participate in 50m rifle prone event at the forthcoming 55th National shooting championships.

Excerpts from a chat at the Balewadi shooting range with Patekar:

Your comment on India's excellence in the sport

Air gun events are affordable. In the other events, cost of the equipment keeps people away. Our focus should be on supporting them. When more people get involved with shooting, we can gain more success internationally.

Apart from competing in 50m prone at the Nationals, in what other ways are you involved in popularising the sport

In a few days from now, I am joining Gun for Glory Academy as a director. My role will be to promote the sport and bring talented kids to the academy.

In Abhinav Bindra we have a current Olympic champion, apart from others who have been world record holders…

It is time the government realised that shooting is a goldmine. Bindra won the Olympic gold, but it is not just he. We have Gagan (Narang) and (Sanjeev) Rajput who can do well.

Away from the shooting range, how do you keep in touch with the sport?

I have the SCATT (shooting simulator system) with me. You need a passion for something to do well.

Reason for choosing 50m rifle prone

Nothing in particular. I guess it suits me. I am taking part in the Nationals after my shooter friends Sanjeev Rajput (2011 World Cup winner in 50m rifle three position) and Lajja Goswami (Commonwealth Games silver medal in women's pairs 3P) convinced me that I am good enough to compete.
