The newly appointed coach of the Indian men's basketball team, Kenny Natt, a top-class professional with rich coaching experience in the NBA, says he loves the challenge of coaching in India.

Back home we have been dealing with professional athletes who knew everything. We are almost starting from scratch here. I love that. I love teaching. It will be great to see these guys develop, said the 52-year-old Natt, as he interacted with The Hindu on Tuesday.

Given a two-year contract to train the national men's team, Natt said he would also be coaching the coaches and developing an overall system right from the junior level, so as to ensure gradual, but sure improvement.

All praise

Though he had been training the probables only for a few days, Natt was all praise for their commitment, and also acknowledged the fact that they had been given the correct principles both in defence and offence by the previous coach Bill Harris who had taken care of the team till the last Asian Games.

The guys have been tremendous. Their commitment to me has been great. Whatever I have asked them, they have been following readily. Initially they were missing a lot of easy lay-ups, because of lack of concentration. I have asked them to focus totally. There is a difference from the first day to today. That is how you improve. We have to see what that translates into, wins or losses, he said.

In a lighter vein, Natt pointed that there was an inherent tendency to short-cut everything and that he had emphasised to the players that there was no easy way out but only the hard way.

Pleased

Quite pleased to be working in a team of professionals with Pete Gaudet, who will take care of the women's team, and Zak Penwell, the strength and conditioning coach Natt said the trio would not only train the main national teams, but also look at the grassroots level and put a system in place.

Natt appreciated the fact that the Union government, IMG-Reliance and the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) had pooled their resources to ensure professional coaches for the game in the country.

The overall vision is to do something for Indian basketball. What I am doing now, it is done for free in the US, because there is a system.
